Population Risk Assessment Methodology
This area of research focuses on developing new statistical methods to monitor the prevalence of cancer risk factors (e.g., diet, physical activity, body weight, smoking) in the population. Also, SRAB staff collaborate in monitoring these risk factors in the US population and relevant sub-populations.
Some examples of SRAB-supported projects are:
- assessing national-level prevalence trends from large-scale surveys such as the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), the Continuing Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals (CSFII), and the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS);
- investigating relationships among risk factors, socio-economic and demographic measures from both large- and small-scale surveys;
- developing methods to combine food frequency and 24-hour dietary recall questionaires to estimate population distributions of consumption of specific foods, food groups, nutrients, and contaminants.
